A Note for Chicago

I am sharing my message for students, families, and alumni attending Penn events in Chicago this weekend. Many flights were cancelled due to a fire in Aurora, Illinois, including my flight to Chicago. These are words I also hope to impart to our larger community.

Students, Parents and Alumni,
I took the R1 train to Philly International on Friday and Saturday to try to be with you today. Sometimes matters are out of our control. The message I most want to convey to prospective students as a parent, Penn alumnus and dean of admissions is that all of you have something special to share; make the most of the college process to find that voice and the kind of environment where you will grow and thrive. Create options with your preferences and aspirations; have ownership over your college list. Yes the journey will take unforeseen detours, but you will arrive at a place where you belong.
